CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) joins Panama in the celebration of the inauguration of the Panama Canal expansion, as the main cement supplier for this globally impactful project.

CEMEX supplied close to a million tons of especially developed cement for the Canal expansion—considered the most important infrastructure project in the last 100 years.

In 2008, the company invested over $300 million to triple its production capacity in Panama to meet the country’s growing demand. Together with its technical capacity and international experience, this enabled CEMEX to supply the cement for this project. To guarantee supply, CEMEX Panama dedicated a production line exclusively for the Panama Canal expansion project.

“CEMEX congratulates the Government, the Panama Canal Authorities, and especially the Panamanian people for the key role they played in this iconic project, which will change the dynamics of global trade and economy,” said Fernando A. Gonzalez, CEO of CEMEX. “Our ability to meet the design, supply, and logistics requirements of our clients is a priority for us. We are proud to have fulfilled the demands of this mega-infrastructure.”

CEMEX Panama and CEMEX Research Group AG designed the cement especially for this project. Developed with durable and low heat hydration properties, this innovative cement enabled fast construction by facilitating massive pouring. It is also highly resistant to chemical sulfates that attack submarine structures.

For five years, CEMEX provided a constant flow of building materials—24 hours a day, seven days a week—to facilitate the construction of the third set of locks for the Canal.

CEMEX’s cement and ready-mix technology centers are part of the R&D collaboration network, headed by CEMEX Research Group AG in Switzerland.

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced that CEMEX USA is contributing to the foundations of two of the tallest, most innovative skyscrapers in the U.S.: the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco and the new Panorama Tower in Miami. From coast to coast, CEMEX USA is supplying more than 23,000 cubic yards (more than 17,500 cubic meters) of concrete for two of the largest mat pours in these cities.

“Our customers are at the center of everything we do, and these projects exemplify our commitment to providing top quality service and products for industry-leading projects,” said Ignacio Madridejos, President of CEMEX USA. “We are proud to contribute in the evolution of the nation’s skylines and to partner with some of the most renowned architects, developers, and suppliers in the world. These buildings need strong foundations, and those foundations start with CEMEX.”

On the West Coast, the Salesforce Tower will become the tallest building in San Francisco once its 61 floors are completed. For this 1.4 million square-foot (about 130,000 square meters) construction project, more than 130 ready-mix concrete trucks from CEMEX’s plants in the San Francisco region performed an 18-hour pour to supply 7,300 (around 5,500 cubic meters) of the approximately 12,000 cubic yards (over 9,100 cubic meters) of concrete required for the job. This marked the second-largest mat pour in the history of the city.

On the East Coast, CEMEX USA provided concrete for the foundation of Miami’s new Panorama Tower, an 83-story building that will become the tallest residential structure on the eastern seaboard south of New York City. For this project, CEMEX USA poured more than 11,600 cubic yards (approximately 8,800 cubic meters) of concrete over 23 hours—the largest single mat pour ever completed in Miami for the largest building foundation in the history of the state of Florida.

Client was able to open the area to light traffic on the next day and even in some areas heavy vehicles were able to circulate just after 72 hrs or finishing the area. Client is studying the possibility of using RCC for upcoming projects and also has invited local authorities to witness the benefits of our solutions.

RCC is simple, fast and economical to install as it doesn’t contain any steel reinforcement, neither does it require formwork or finishing. Significant savings of up to 30% can be achieved over a traditional pavement construction. The high strength of an RCC pavement eliminates common problems that have traditionally been associated with other pavement types. CX RCC is more resistant to rutting, is capable of withstanding heavy concentrated loads and is immune to low or high temperature extremes. CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced that CEMEX in Egypt contributed to the paving of Egypt’s first concrete highway. The approximately 22-mile (35-kilometer) road connects Cairo, the country’s capital, with the seaport city of Suez, two of the nation’s most important economic centers.

CEMEX in Egypt supplied 130,000 cubic meters of concrete for the Cairo-Suez highway. This concrete paving solution offers this country a number of advantages over traditional asphalt roads, including greater durability, higher tolerance, better visibility—especially at night—superior resistance to severe weather, lower periodic maintenance, and higher road safety.

Although CEMEX has successfully applied concrete technology to roads worldwide, it is new to Egypt. This achievement resulted from multiple concrete initiatives over the past several years. Beginning in 2011, CEMEX in Egypt demonstrated the beneficial characteristics of concrete paving to Egypt’s General Authority of Roads and Bridges by working closely with the private sector on several pavement projects.

Following three years of workshops, studies, and deliberations with Egypt’s General Authority of Roads and Bridges, CEMEX in Egypt was granted permission to initiate the Cairo-Suez project. The preparation, design capabilities, road tolerance, and permanence of the solution, combined with the high on-site performance and expertise of CEMEX in Egypt, resulted in the Authority’s decision to invest in the construction of this important highway.

“We are very proud to have paved Egypt’s first concrete highway, and contributed to the development of the country,” said Ramon Piza, CEMEX Egypt Country Manager. “We believe the future of Egypt has to be built with sustainable and environment-friendly solutions.”

CEMEX has a rich history of improving the well-being of those it serves through innovative building solutions, efficiency advancements, and efforts to promote a sustainable future.
