Our journey to net-zero
Cemex is among the first companies in the cement industry to achieve validation by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) of our Scope 1, 2 & 3 2030 targets aligned to the 1.5ºC Scenario and our 2050 net-zero CO₂ emissions goal.
Scope 1: Reduction Levers
Scope 1 emissions, which cover direct emissions from cement production and our fleet, saw a 4% reduction in 2023. As clinker production drives the bulk of CO₂ emissions, we’re committed to leading the industry’s transition to carbon neutrality.
Alternative Fuels
Alternative fuels reduce reliance on fossil fuels by powering our kilns with energy from municipal, industrial, and agricultural waste, lowering CO₂ impact and supporting waste management. Our 2030 is to reach over 55% rate of alternative fuels.
Hydrogen Injection
Our innovative hydrogen injection improves kiln combustion, allowing for more efficient use of alternative fuels. This technology supports lower carbon fuel integration, and enhances energy efficiency across our global operations.
Biomass Content
We prioritize alternative fuels with high biomass content, achieving a neutral CO₂ impact by using materials that have already absorbed carbon from the atmosphere. This fuel innovation also supports communities by reducing landfill waste and promoting cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
Clinker Factor
Reducing the clinker factor is essential for lowering CO₂ emissions, as clinker production is the most carbon-intensive step in cement manufacturing. Replacing clinker with industrial byproducts reduces energy intensity while ensuring product durability.
Clinker substitutes
We are constantly improving our clinker reduction by using industrial byproducts like fly ash and slag and enhancing clinker composition with mineralizers. This approach cuts emissions and energy use, which contributes to lower carbon cement production.
Blended Cements
To drive down CO₂ emissions, we're expanding the use of blended cements that incorporate supplementary materials such as limestone and calcined clay. This innovation reduces the reliance on clinker, enabling more sustainable cement production that aligns with lower carbon construction demands.
Raw Materials
Using decarbonated raw materials in clinker production lowers carbon emissions, as these materials emit no CO₂ when heated. This approach reduces carbon impact while maintaining product quality.
Circularity in Raw Materials
By sourcing decarbonated materials, we promote circularity, turning waste from other industries into valuable resources for clinker production. This shift not only cuts emissions but also reduces dependence on virgin raw materials, aligning with our broader sustainability goals.
Regional Leadership
Our cement plants in Europe European plants set the benchmark for decarbonated raw materials use, integrating close to 10% into clinker production.

We enhance thermal efficiency by developing lower CO₂ clinkers, adjusting clinker composition, and using special mineralizers. These innovations reduce energy intensity and CO₂ emissions in production, while waste heat recovery and advanced fuel technologies lower our footprint.

Global Fleet
As a global leader in ready-mix concrete, reducing transport emissions is essential to our climate commitment. We’re advancing with lower-carbon trucks, renewable fuels, and long-term innovations like zero emission vehicles to reduce our CO₂ footprint and drive sustainability.
Lower Carbon Mixer Trucks
We’ve accelerated our transition to lower carbon heavy-duty trucks by adding nearly 500 units in 2023 alone, reducing emissions per vehicle by approximately 25%.
Electromobility
We’re breaking new ground globally across the industry with fully electric mixer trucks. These vehicles demonstrate our commitment to innovative, zero-emission transport, underscoring our leadership in sustainable construction logistics.
Scope 2: Clean Electricity
We’re lowering our carbon footprint by prioritizing clean electricity for our operations. Using renewables, power purchase agreements, and onsite energy solutions, we reduce emissions tied to the electricity that powers our operations.
2023 Performance
In 2023, we achieved a reduction of 12% in our specific Scope 2 CO₂ emissions compared to our 2020 baseline.
2030 Emissions Target
As part of our 2030 targets validated by SBTi, we strive to reduce by more than half our specific Scope 2 emissions, aiming to emit no more than 24 kgCO₂ per ton of cementitious product.
Scope 3: Indirect Emmissions
Our ambitious Scope 3 goals reflect our commitment to reducing emissions throughout our value chain. With targets for CO₂ reductions in purchased clinker, cement, fuels, and transport, we strive to significantly lower indirect emissions and align with global climate efforts. Partnering with EcoTransit World, we improve logistics efficiency, enhance transparency, and promote lower carbon fuels to drive impactful progress toward Scope 3 reduction.
