Vulnerable Road Users Awareness
At CEMEX, the health and safety of the people is of the highest priority. This year’s initiative will be with a special focus on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). VRUs like pedestrians, especially children and elderly, cyclists, and even users of e-scooters and skateboards.
We have recently conducted VRU Awareness to the employees of one of our stakeholders, Delmon Cleaning & Security Services, at their company accommodation, in Al Qusais, Dubai. The objective of this campaign is to reinforce the importance of keeping distance from the heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, to improve road safety, and to achieve ZERO for life.
By doing this initiative, we would be able to change the behavior of the cyclists and motorcyclists. Hence, one by one, the CEMEX Health & Safety team showed and helped the employees realize the importance of being alert and keeping distance from the vehicles by letting them sit on the truck driver’s seat.
Here are the following activities that were conducted:
- Identified the blind spots of trucks
- Discussed the behavior of these users
- Demonstrating how to keep the minimum safety distance of 1.5 meters
- Showed the proximity sensors alert
- How to be more visible to drivers in the evening where there’s poor visibility
Another important step that has been taken is the ‘Look twice! Before you cross’ reminder sticker posted on the different types of trucks of CEMEX – cement bulkers and concrete mixers. This campaign is specifically for pedestrians who are sometimes complacent in crossing the street without realizing how dangerous and how life-threatening it can be.
In the next few weeks and months, CEMEX in the UAE will work hard in raising this awareness in collaboration with Supply Chain and Health & Safety Team to roll out the enhancement of the road safety for all users in the local community and education sectors of UAE.
